Final Reflection

After 4 years in the Glasgow school of art, it is a bit emotional to finish this ppj. This project has been an extraordinary human experience for me.
I was able to create a small ecosystem of reflection around water resources. I was able to question, learn and teach.
Thanks to these 4 years I was able to understand and create the design practice that suits me best. Collaborating to move forward would be the summary of these 4 years. This project was long and hard. I had to learn that working with more than 30 people means staying open and flexible throughout the project. I have learned to be confident enough to teach my pedagogical tools that I have assimilated throughout my time at GSA. I can't thank the whole GSA teaching staff enough for following, supporting and teaching us all these wonderful things.
The topic of my essay this year is directly associated with this project. "How speculative design, as a tool, stimulates our imagination". Imagination is a way of thinking that relies on the ability to consciously break free from reality to construct new images that allow for a richer and more complex view of reality. In the young child, imagination is a spontaneous act, often linked to emotions, which would have, among other things, the function of filling the cognitive gaps left by his inexperience of the world. Gradually, imagination develops in parallel with rational thought and becomes a reflective activity, complementary to rational thought and generating numerous "possibilities" that open up unknown horizons.
Seen in this light, imagination certainly plays an important role not only in the development of the individual but also in the development of societies.
In this light, imagination certainly plays an important role not only in the development of the individual but also in the development of societies and species.

The speculative design approach allows us to consciously free ourselves from reality in order to think differently in future-oriented design practice. This practice pushes the designer to play a more ethical role in society, the designer is placed as a tool for reflection and innovation. The designer is positioned as a tool for reflection and innovation in the consumer product market. Instead of positioning his direct opinion and deciding on solutions to pre-defined problems, he uses the situation presented as a basis for reflection with the aim of opening it up and translating it through his project for everyone to see. In this way, he creates an open basis for discussion and exchange that encourages collective intelligence and the stimulation of the imagination of others and therefore of his own.
It also stimulates the imagination of others and therefore it's own.

This form of exchange creates a perpetual renewal of thought and enriches the imagination of each person.
Accommodating reality in another form through new representations of our reality.
By exhibiting this speculative project, I create a platform for a form of critical reflection.
From this, useful spin-offs could emerge for thinking about educational interventions conducive to the development of critical thinking and to the development of collaboration among others? For example, thinking about the future of early childhood education with open collaborative workshops on the discussion of possible scenarios, through drawings, drawings, etc. This is what I tried to achieve with this collaborative project.

To conclude, I will quote one of the teachers who participated in my project:

Capture d’écran 2021-05-09 à 14.17.03.

"The experience of working with Axelle Julien was more than positive.
She gave us 'access' to a form of design not sufficiently taught in French design pedagogy: speculative design.
This permission that we gave ourselves and the students raised new learning and creativity issues.
It allowed us to push the students to think in very innovative formats.
The graphic vocabulary came to replace an epistolary habit that was far too present in our conception and transmission of design.

This project was also made possible thanks to Axelle's availability and commitment.
She has been present and attentive at every stage of the design process, and this cross-fertilisation of approaches - between her status as a student at the forefront and our experiences as design teachers - has enabled us to draw the outlines of a rich and promising project for the students.
There is no doubt that we will integrate speculative design as one of the important components of our pedagogical corpus and renew the proposal each year with our students.
I would like to thank Axelle once again for her initiative and the great quality of transmission that she has shown."

Thank you to everyone for this wonderful experience.
