My concept is a device that permits communication of emotion through touch and other sense like smell. This device aims to be in a distance communication with a person in the terminal phase, Alice here, and someone she loves far away from her, as her grandson for my scenario.
I started to draw a few ideas of concepts and I set up a mood board. I wanted to communicate softness, calm, lightness, and comfort. My mood board is composed of pastel colours and thick textures. The ideas of this collage were to make the user feel comfortable and reassured. I decided to use white clay and paper to explore through making to keep my mood board atmosphere. I start by asking myself “What kind of different devices I should represent?” “3”.
The first one is a piece of jewellery that permits my device to recognize the emotions of the user. This ring sends the emotional information in 2 different direction groups of researchers on the terminal phase in cancer, that collection of info could permit a better understanding of the stage of the terminal phase through an emotional filter. And secondly, this ring sends the info to my device. This 2nd device is with a person close to the patient, it can be a member of the family, or a friend, a neighbour. This device transforms the emotion thanks to a database in a poem. This poem will be printed with at the end an indication on with body part could help to appease the pain or the fear she’s feeling. Person 2 now where she could activate divice3, which is a little massage item that is with the personnel at the hospital.
The person feels touch and feels better, the ring sends another info more positive to the device2 who can print and so communicate a better feeling to the person 2 with another poem.
The main idea of this concept was to have as much I could interaction between the 2 people in distance.
I start to explore paper to create different touch, soft, aggressive,…
I asked two of my friend to test this material and give me feedback about the material and the body parts they find more enjoyable with. For example, Annah said to me she like the paper crumpled on her legs and forearm, she enjoyed the scratch feeling.
I filmed them, to first have a record of this test and to study after how they were grabbing each of them and how they were using them instinctively.
The smell could increase the experience and feel the emotion in deep. I start to draw and write about new concept base on the first one but with the smell and why not music? or noise?
At this stage, my next stapes were to expend the research with other senses and to have a better explanation and understanding of my scenario. I had to developpe another background scenario to go in deep with other people touched by my project, for example, the scientist and psychologist research who have access to my user emotional data collection.
